Educated locally and in the city of Madras, Shri R Venkataraman obtained his Master's degree in Economics from Madras University with Banking & Currency and Public Finance as special subjects. He later qualified in Law from the Law College, Madras.

Shri R Venkataraman has received the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) from University of Madras. He is Honorary Fellow, Madras Medical College; Doctor of Social Sciences from University of Roorkee; Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) from University of Burdwan.

He was also awarded Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the Philippines University. He has been awarded the Tamra Patra for participation in the freedom struggle. He is the recipient of a Souvenir from the Secretary-General of the United Nations for distinguished service as President of the U.N. Administrative Tribunal. The title of "Sat Seva Ratna" has been conferred on him by His Holiness the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Shri Venkataraman played a major role in the establishment and functioning of the Swaminatha Swamy Temple (Malai Mandir) in New Delhi.

He was a prolific writer and a distinguished orator. In a public life spanning well over sixty years, he was editor of Labour law Journal (1949 - 57), and 'Swarajya' ( 1975-77), a regular contributor to Bhavan' s Journal during his tenure as President of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Editorials by Shri R. Venkataraman

1.		Swarajya - A journal founded by Rajaji and published by T Sadasivan. RV was the Editor of the journal during 1975 - 77. It played an important role during the period of Emergency, ensuring critical but balanced views of value to the Government and the People at large.

2.		Bhavan's Journal, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan - In his post-presidential era Shri R Venkataraman was invited to be the President of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and he regularly wrote pieces on contemporary issues under "President Speaks". Several of these articles remain valuable regardless of the time when they were written.
